Wireless Network in a Box for Multisite Churches, VPN

This is pretty neat stuff if you ask me.

Joel Lingenfelter shows us how they created a simple way for volunteers at their other sites to create a wireless network that connected to the main campus via VPN.

Check out this video walkthrough:

Pretty clever! I’d love to see what the specific breakdown of the parts and how much this might cost!

Also sounds like a clever product to package up and sell to other ministries…

    That is pretty slick.

Though the audio on the video was horribly obnoxious to listen to. But hey, what can you do :)

Clever hack, but seems rather clunky, considering there are a number of decent devices out there (Sonicwall TZ210 is one that we use a lot) that will do this in a single box with minimal configuration.

    Rough Breakdown:

    FitPC: $300
    Wireless: $50-100
    Linksys SRW208P: $300
    Fan and wiring bits: $30
    Box: $30
    LCD: $50

Total about $750-$800 plus the time to put it together and launch/recover each week.

Sonicwall TZ210W (business-grade): $700-850. All you have to do is plug it in, and unplug it when you’re done. I’m sure LinkCisco and Netgear have something similar in SOHO-grade for about a third of the price.

Again, neat hack, but not sure if it’s worth the trouble. I’m more interested in how they’re doing Arena check-in on iPads :)
