I saw a quote somewhere. I can’t remember who said it or exactly how it was worded, but the gist of the quote was this: Only follow dead people because they won’t let you down.

Interesting the way you recast the question for spiritual heroes. I suppose we do to some extent, but then I would argue that is what spiritual heroes are for – to remind us that it is possible to live a holy life and that there is a god. Of course, when you said “spiritual heroes” my mind immediately went to the saints, and not modern Christian celebrities (where I can see the danger).
