The Olympics are almost over and it has been a social media revolution for this year. There have been more tweets, Facebook statuses, Olympians getting removed from competition for outlandish remarks online, and interactions via social media between the athletes and viewers. Some see this as only a good thing for the Olympics. Now people will know more and more about the competition and the world can grow closer in unity.
But what do social media users actually know about the Olympics? Here are some of the highlights of the infographic below from a study taken before the Olympics started:
- More people knew who Michael Phelps was and that he endorses Subway than what colors the five Olympic rings are and what is the definition of Olympiad.
- 30% of people think the Olympics have never been cancelled. I would be curious of the age demographics on this and seen who got it wrong that lived through WW1 and WW2.
- Social media users are 5 times more likely to watch the Olympics than the presidential debate… yikes!
How many of those questions would you have been right on?
