A recent article about a creative and opportunistic thief has reminded me that we need to be of like mind in terms of using technology in innovative ways.
This thief essentially used Google Maps to locate valuable lead that was used in roofing around the UK and then steal the materials to be resold.
It was never Google’s original intent to “aid” bandits in pursuit of raw materials for resale.
But that’s what he did.
Although I would never suggest using web tech for purposes such as these it does serve us a healthy reminder in what we’re “doing” online.
We need to look outside the box, see opportunity where no one else sees it, use web technologies in ways that were never intended, and create connection and/or community where no one thought possible.
We need to be willing to “risk” the consequences of being “caught” in order to do that which no one else is doing so that we may “win” over those that no one else can.

"We need to be willing to “risk” the consequences of being “caught” in order to do that which no one else is doing so that we may “win” over those that no one else can."
I am all for innovation, but there must be a moral code and consequences for our actions. We may be willing to risk to take what is not rightfully ours to pursue. That has to be wrong and punished, not applauded.
One should not go beyond certain boundaries in the pursuit of winning.
Definitely. Without question. Perhaps I should have added that.
Morally and ethically you can't cross those boundaries. there is certainly a fine point.
I understand, and I applaud your concern. But why the automatic assumption of the extreme?
it's our nature. hot or cold, right? agreed tho daniel. doesn't always have to be..
The engineer in me is left wondering why lead is used in roofing tiles?

Still doesn't make sense.
yeah… old skool…?
I agree…anything less of sin. I think the problem is that people are in faith communities that don't allow them to risk and try things that aren't the "norm" of that organization…so people just end up doing the same thing for years and wonder why they don't see much impact.
I agree as well. Not automatic assumption of worse, but automatic recognition that the worst can easily happen if not on guard for it.
recognition. word.
