It is definitely true that ministries need to have a biblical foundation but without people it’s wasted.
Sounds like a tension to be managed!

everything we do is a sermon. where we shop, the music we use and the “marketing” that we choose to use.
placing a dichotomy between “church” and “what-gets-people-to-church” is – in my view – unhealthy.
Also, our marketing efforts probably “preach” to more people than a sermon does. just a thought…
Adam, dude, LOVE this perspective. Wow, that’s dripping with wisdom!

Ha. Love the cartoon. It’s true that a lot of the anti-church marketing folks are a tad embittered and fruitless.
I think it’s worth mentioning that Jesus never branded or marketed himself.
Good point!

Of course, if all you have is good marketing and no community, then you also end up with no people…or just lots of shallow people which is probably even worse. I see this in a lot of churches as well so there is some tension and balance between the two perspectives.
I have less issues with marketing generally than I do about what is marketed and how it is marketed. A lot of church marketing I see is just like business marketing…basically, pretty lies to help attract people’s attention. If you market, make sure it really is who you are as a church and make it genuine like Adam alluded too.
Also along with what Adam said, I’d also add that the type of software we use is also a sermon…what are you preaching? Closed? Exclusive? Expensive? or Free? Open? Community-driven? Sharing?
