Technology and Cultural Constructs

666_followersI’ve been doing a lot of thought surrounding web technology and how “culture” plays a much larger part in what we do than we admit or understand.

You see, apparently things like superstition still manages to find its way onto the interwebs and into the web technologies that we so carelessly use every single day.

For example, I managed to catch my Twitter follower count when it hit 666.

Scary, right?

666_followers2But why? Why should it be?

For many, the number “666″ means nothing to them. But, I bring that cultural perspective into the tools and technology that I use. I don’t necessarily think about it, but it colors how I engage and it is the lense through which I participate.

As a result, it makes me think of how much more wisely we should be when we use web technology, especially now that we’re aware of the cultural constructs that still play much a part of the internet-world as it does outside (or offline).

Have you thought about how powerful culture can be? What’s “stuff” do you bring, culturally, to the digital landscape?

It is 626. There was a guy that was looking at old manuscript and says that 666 is a mistake. That what is in the old ones is 626 (which is the area code for Ann Arbor Michigan).
