The title of the new Star Wars movie has been announced: Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Very little is actually known about this movie, other than the title, its release date (December 15th of this year), and that the story will take place immediately after Star Wars: The Force Awakens. That doesn’t keep fans (like me) from eagerly speculating though!
The director did tease the all-too-familiar opening crawl, which was notably absent from Rogue One. The consideration behind that was that they wanted to keep the original movies separate from the spin offs, like Rogue One and possibly more.
Immediately after the movie title was announced, the Internet responded like only the Internet can, with worry expressed in memes. This one captured the thoughts of many perfectly:
This one was pretty funny, too:
This worry about Luke’s fate was, of course, fueled by events in the previous episode when [SPOILER ALERT] Han Solo was killed by [ANOTHER SPOILER ALERT] his own son, Kylo Ren. The many, many deaths in Rogue One didn’t help either.
And then there was the unexpected passing of actress Carrie Fisher, the legendary Princess Leia or more recently, General Leia Organa. Luckily, the filming for Episode VIII was done already, but the question remains how this will affect the storyline in the episode after The Last Jedi, which is planned for 2019. Sure, they have managed to ‘resurrect’ a young Princess Leia in Rogue One (and remarkably well, one might add), as well as Grand Moff Tarkin, but the studio already announced they will not be doing this for Carrie Fischer. However, she had been scheduled to appear in that movie, the studio confirmed, so the big question is how they will solve this problem.
For now, all eyes are on The Last Jedi and the question of what will happen to Luke. Nothing is known about the story, so all fans can do is speculate. The title suggests there is a last Jedi and logically, that would be Luke. But clearly, Rey has the Force as well, so if Luke would start training her, would she become the last Jedi? Last assumes there’s only one left…so you can see why fans are getting worried. We’ll all have to wait until more becomes known.
When the first teaser for The Force Awakens was released (with that unbelievably goosebumps-inducing line ‘Chewie, we’re home’ in classic Han Solo-style), the Internet exploded. It’s a safe bet this will happen again when more is shown from The Last Jedi. Rumor are that we can expect a teaser next month, possibly around the Super Bowl, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed.
In the meantime, let’s speculate some.
