Springloops For Distributed, Inexpensive Source Control

Source control is at the heart of any serious software development team. Depending on the size of your business, you may be running your own source control platform in-house. Some of us simply pay other services out there to do it.

The thing is, if you’re a bootstrapped startup with a handful of developers, it’s easy to find inexpensive source control but stumbling across a stable and free platform is rare.

Springloops looks to be a solid solution for small teams looking for a slick source control that won’t break the bank.

Aside from the features that have come to be expected such as secure backups, solid uptime, and so on, Springloops’ free account offers three active projects, three S/FTP deployments per day, unlimited users, and easy roll backs. If you’re usingĀ Basecamp (like yours truly), Springloops will integrate with your account, as well.

What do you think – pique your interest?

Wow, looks incredible! We’re using Basecamp to manage our creative team, and I’ve been looking for a source control solution for our web team, this could be the perfect solution. Thanks for the lead.

Looks shiny, but will lack the expandability and plugability of an open solution like Trac. If hosting your own Trac install sounds too painful (and believe me, there’s a *reason* I outsourced this when I was doing source code-y things on a more professional basis), there are plenty of great Trac hosts out there. I’d recommend wush.net – their uptime and speed, even with absolutely enormous svn repositories, has been exemplary.

Thanks the the link, Ted – love sharing other available options.

Trac has been highly recommended to me on a number of occasions, but my few experiences with it were not all that impressive. It suffers from the same thing as most open source projects: lack of polish, refinement, and that “I’m a real product” feeling.

Same with Jira. Sounds great, but I gotta spend thousands of dollars to a real company to even get off the ground with it.

I have to admit that I hated Trac until I had it professional hosted for me and had some plugins and customizations added. But the open source-ness is a value-add for me, personally. I’m a coder, and source control is a tool. Pretty is nice, but pretty is a secondary feature.
