The Ice Bucket Challenge took social media by storm and was/has been a great success with millions of dollars raised for charities. It’s also given something fun for people to share online.
But in India, Manju Latha Kalanidhi saw all of this social media soaking and wondered how this “challenge” could be applied to the people of India:
“[P]eople dumping water on themselves, shrieking, taking videos, the whole idea sort of went over my head…. I felt that as Indians we could not connect to it at some level.”
And so the Rice Bucket Challenge was born.
The Rice Bucket Challenge
As you can see, the Rice Bucket Challenge is simple:
- Pickup a bowl of rice from your kitchen
- Go to the nearest needy person and give it to them
- Take a picture and post it on Facebook with the hashtag #RiceBucketChallenge
- Tag all your friends and ask them to take up the challenge
I love the tag at the end:
“It is important to post back on Facebook at it will inspire all your friends to come forward. Small drops make an ocean!”
#HEART
I love how positive and human this challenge is. This puts you in direct contact to those who are benefiting from this small act of kindness. And instead of ‘calling people out,’ the focus is placed more on inspiring others.
And the results are beautiful:

I think there’s something absolutely beautiful about the aspect of human touch with the Rice Bucket Challenge. Those involved in the challenge aren’t left with the memory of getting doused with ice cold water, instead, they are left with the experience of having looked another person in the eyes and given them a simple bowl of rice.
It is this kind of challenge that inspires me and spurs me on further to do practical acts of love and service to those in need around me.
It’s cool to see how the peoples of India are using social media in such a powerful and practical way.
What do you think about the Ice Bucket Challenge in comparison to the Rice Bucket Challenge?
