My life online is made up by a slew of different sites. I use facebook to stay connected to friends, I use twitter to follow the minute-by-minute play by play of the people I care about, I go to tangle to watch Christian videos and stay connected with my church friends, I go to CNN for news, yahoo for stock quotes, and then I use AIM (instant messenger) and email for communication. All in all, I try to look at my life online like I do my stock portfolio... It is all about DIVERSIFICATION. Why put all of my eggs in one basket... Too many people put all of their eggs into Myspace and now they have had to build new accounts elsewhere. I like to go online and be who I am and share my thoughts, ideals, beliefs, etc online... Online is my megaphone to the world and with sites like social networks (Facebook, MySpace, tangle, etc), I can level the playing field and go where my voice is just a valid, important, and relevant as anyone elses. The key is to understand the proper mix or diversification formula for yourself. I like some facebook mixed in with some twitter, a good dose of tangle, and then a dash of You Tube every once in awhile. The point is to understand what is the best mix for you and how do you effectively manage your persona online. Too much and you are inundated and diluted by noise, too little and you aren't staying connected. The key is to find just the right amount of each bit of online joy to make yourself content. That's actually rather offensive if you think about it.....What if people followed you around on the street just because you have friends in a number of different places in life, but didn't really care about you, your thoughts, your opinions, your ambitions but simply wanted their message to come out of your mouth? I can post pictures, video, blog entries, etc. and determine exactly who sees what. That's hard to accomplish with other sites. Plus, by importing my blog as FB notes via RSS... and importing tweets as status updates via the Twitter app... FB really does not require that much additional time. It's almost autopilot. Just a daily check for notifications of comments is all it takes! I still use Facebook as a primary social network because of its privacy options.
