This is the first article in the series Publishing Your Own eBook series.
Writing your first eBook an extremely exciting and at the same time terrifying thing to accomplish. This is not like writing a blog article or several social media updates. Your expertise will be tested as you will have some 20 to 50 pages of content that needs to flow well, not repeat yourself, and have to stand the test of time. This will take more time than a blog entry, maybe up to 200 hours, depending on how long and pretty you want it or if you plan to sell it. At the same time, once you write and distribute this document, there is no editing it.
With these concerns in mind, here are three perfectly good reasons to still press forward to write an eBook.
- A Product To Sell
Many organizations solely rely on publishing books electronically and completely bypass printing their books. It is both a cost saving decision (you do not have to pay to store extra copies of books in a warehouse) as well as a timing issue (when the product is done it takes a couple of days to distribute whereas printing could take months). In the past year, over 20% of people have read an eBook and the average eBook reader read 24 books in 2011 making it a HUGE market to invest in. (PewResearch.org) It is a highly profitable market to get into that you could be apart by the end of the month! - Offer A Free Resource As A Marketing Technique
One of the best uses of eBooks recently has been when bloggers offer it as a free resource to their viewers in return for either a Facebook Like or a to sign up on a newsletter subscription. In fact, we highly suggest everyone who is starting up a blog to come up with a 5-10 page eBook to hand out at the launch of their blog to spur conversation and have a strong opening week of views and comments. All this requires is a bit of effort on your part. - You Have The Time
With the recession hitting a lot of people, taking six months to write several eBooks, this is the perfect time to find a niche market for your business or hobby. As we stated, it could take anywhere from 30 to 200 hours from start to finish to write a really good book, depending on the length of the eBook, the editing process, the eBook design, and if you intend to sell it. If you put 40 hours a week for six months, you could have between 5 and 24 eBooks written by October.
What reasons do you have to want to put together an eBook and is it worth the effort for you?
