I’ve been trying Pixelmator this past week instead of Photoshop and so far the jury is still out. I had found a coupon for 50% off and so I thought I’d try it out.
Do you have any experience with it? What are your thoughts? Convince me that this is a better app!

Well no one can deny the skin is much nicer…

Clarifying: the UI Skin.

It’s definitely cheaper than Photoshop, even with a student discount. The UI also looks more refined than GIMP (which I loathe with a passion). I’ve not used Pixelmator, but it may be worth a shot.

I use PIxelmator as my primary graphics editor. Now, I’m a lead pastor who happens to do some of our graphics (as opposed to a legit graphics guy), but it performs up to my standards. Then again, my standards are basically “not as expensive as photoshop.”
I used gimpshop in the past, and you won’t find me ever doing that again.

The problem with Photoshop is that it’s a cruise-liner when you might only need a yacht or even a small boat. A lot of us work with layers, a few filters, custom brushes, and the generic set of tools and I think Pixelmator has all that at a price we can afford. Photoshop is starting to feel the weight of its age with feature bloat. Don’t get me wrong it’s got some amazing things for those that might need it, but I’m not sure I fall in that category anymore.
Also take a look at Acorn for another lovely Mac image editor with a great UI.

1. Purchase stock in alternative software
2. Carefully place comments through 8bit
3. ???
4. Profit!!!
😉 Glad you like it, I’m a fan of both editors and really just glad to see more well-designed alternatives to Photoshop coming on the market.

HAH!

I got it when I ran across a half off deal. Really really impressed with it. it has some amazing generators built in.
The only two things I wish it had…
Vector based shapes
Better text handling..
David says
agreed. and i haven’t found a way to warp or mis-shape an object within pixelmator. that’s when i have to move over to my wife’s laptop and fire up photoshop elements…
Ben Miller says
I vote for GIMP. Available for my PC, very powerful, and the price is right, too.

I’ve had Pixelmator for almost 2 years now I suppose, and It’s my go-to for graphics. That being said I’m not a designer, but I think it’s found a great niche for people that don’t need the power and depth of Photoshop.
I agree that it could benefit from some vector and text reworking.
