A Clever Work-Around of Facebook’s Cover Photo Rules

It’s great that we can utilize timeline cover photos for pages, but the Facebook rules on what you can’t do are incredibly limiting to what one can do. They are quite strict on what you cannot show in your cover photo:

  • Price or purchase information, such as “40% off” or “Download it at our website”
  • Contact information, such as web address, email, mailing address or other information intended for your Page’s About section
  • References to user interface elements, such as Like or Share, or any other Facebook site features
  • Calls to action, such as “Get it now” or “Tell your friends”…

I’m mainly concerned with these bullet points! It completely goes against the previous way pages worked and the way designers were able to get creative with them! Remember when everybody had huge arrows pointing to the like button! We’re not allowed to do that anymore!

The reason for all this is that Facebook wants page admins to use ads which is great if you are a big business, but if you are a charity or other non-profit this becomes more difficult.

How-To Disable WordPress Plugin Updates

If you’re in charge of maintaining a church, ministry or client website, you know how frustrating it can be for someone who has administrative permission to update plugins.

Normally, this isn’t a problem, but sometimes this can lead to a broken site. I’ve had modded plugins updated, before, so you can image my relief when I found I had a backup. Modded plugin update = plugin modification gone!

Another situation arose when a non-profit contacted me with some web issues. Their website was broken. The reason? Plugin updates.

There are obviously a number of good reasons to prevent WordPress form checking if your plugins need updating. I would first try using a user role editor or some other work around to avoid misguided plugin updates, as plugin update notifications are by nature a good idea.

However, there’s always an exception, especially if you have multiple site Admins.

Compfight WordPress Plugin: #FTW or #FAIL?

compfight wordpress plugin

My favorite place to look for images is Compfight. It searches Flickr for your search term and the results are based on the specified license, in my case I use Creative Commons.

When I arrived at Compfight, recently, I was presented with the info they had released a WordPress plugin! Cool!

So, I gave it a spin!

How Do You Design Responsive Sites? [Download]

How do you create website mockups for clients in light of responsive design? Or do you simply mock the site and the client sees the mobile version later?

At some point, this is going to have to change. With the mobile web bursting as the seams, you’re going to need to address this. If not by necessity, then this could be something that sets you apart or ahead of everyone else.

But who wants to mock-up three versions? (Desktop, Tablet and Smartphone)

Here’s an interesting solution (and free PSD):

Protect Your Privacy On Social Media [Infographic]

In the age of the Internet, we have all taken steps to protect ourselves. Our passwords are private, eight characters long, and include an alphabetical, numerical, and special character for protection. We do not click the email from someone in Africa that wants to give us hundreds of thousands of dollars. We even make sure that we have a secure HTTP connection on all financial transaction websites.

Yet, even with all of this, we still could be leaving ourselves wide open in the area of privacy. The context is within social media and not everything is within our control.

Miserere for Maundy Thursday [Video]

‘Miserere mei, Deus’ by the Italian Renaissance composer Gregorio Allegri is one of the most beautiful and haunting pieces of music ever written. It’s a setting of Psalm 51, in latin, and calls for God’s mercy.

It was originally written in the 1630s exclusively for use in the Sistine Chapel during the Tenebrae services in Holy Week. The services would be candlelit starting about 3am and the candles would be extinguished, one by one, until one remained alight and hidden.

This version is one of the best versions, recorded by the UK choral group ‘The Sixteen’. It also has subtitles. So on this Maundy Thursday, please use this as a prayer and let the amazing music wash over you.
