Open Thread: Tips on Great Panorama Shots?

One of our community members asked a question via his Flickr on any tips for panorama shots.

Since I’m even worse than an amateur I can’t give any advice, so it goes to you community!

    While I don’t know all the proper jargon, I’ve read that while you could simply stand there and rotate your body to get the continuous shots, this often ends up causing trouble later in Photoshop etc.

    This is because you are rotating the camera sensor around your own bodies pivot point, not the cameras. There should be a point in your camera (differs depending on lens etc.) that is the real pivot point. Imagine you have your camera on a tripod – you then rotate the camera around a much smaller axis than if your whole body was moving.

    That’s my advice… I hope it actually makes sense.

    It’s almost impossible without one.
    And only add ~1/3 of the scene per shot. That should get you great results.

    I have only put together one of these and the lesson I learned was:

    Don’t use a wide lens. The distortion created by a wide lens is compounded with Photoshop’s stitch and can make for some very curvy lines.
