Are you raising kids who are educated consumers?
Have you taught them how to see through the “marketing mess” that is continuously thrown their/our way?
To make the most out of what God has blessed us with, it’s important for us to be conscience of marketing tactics that are often designed to push and pull us towards making purchases—or even taking advantage of us.
Sometimes it’s simple stuff like online scams.
A young man at my church recently lost his Steam account and lost about $100 worth of games. And while he could have had better security in place to protect his account, the fact that he had signed-up for several gimmick websites “giving away” “free Steam games” certainly increased his chances of being taken advantaged of.
This is an extreme example—not to mention totally shady online money maker—it highlights the importance of educating our kids (and ourselves) about the wiles of the web.
This creative and kid centric video below introduces the concept of online advertising. It’s a great video to watch with your kids and begin the conversation of why the web is “free.”

I’ve shared a few thoughts on the importance of understanding the mechanics of marketing and the “wiles of the web,” but I would love to hear what you think!
