With the same big, attention seeking flamboyance of Kim Dotcom, MEGA is back and BIGGER than ever.
Brazened across the screen above the giant, red MEGA button it says, “The privacy company. Bigger. Better. Faster. Stronger. Safer.”
MEGA’s “re-launch” came one year to the day of Megaupload‘s shutdown last January. In fact, Megaupload’s URL still has the FBI notice.
Here’s a closer look at what MEGA has to offer–and it just may change cloud storage pricing forever…
MEGA
If it wasn’t for Kim Dotcom’s history, I would have signed-up already. Their prices are amazing and there’s plenty of options beginning to bubble up:
The only thing that keeps MEGA from completely destroying the competition, is the lack of a desktop or mobile app. Unlike Dropbox, Google Drive and Sugar Sync, this cloud storage can only be accessed via your browser.
If they ever bring an app to the table, this could seriously alter the current cloud storage pricing, much as Google Drive’s undercut of Dropbox forced Dropbox to double their user’s storage.
Pricing
The pricing is as follows:
Can you imagine?
2TB for only $20 per month?
But here’s the kicker: MEGA’s free account gives you 50GB!
About a year ago, I signed up for Dropbox at $10 per month–for 50GB!
Will You Sign Up?
Considering Kim Dotcom’s history as a person and business owner, is it worth the risk?
Remember all those people who couldn’t get to their files because the FBI had shut Megaupload down?
Nobody wants to be that guy.
Perhaps that’s why MEGA is offering so much, to push us past that edge of hesitance from the fear of being cut-off from our own files.
What do you think about the resurrection of Kim Dotcom’s mass storage empire?
Will you sign up for a free or paid MEGA account?
Is it ethically wrong to do business with someone like this?

Chris Coppenbarger says
Considering that Kim Dotcom has yet to be found guilty of anything other than a big ego, I might not have a problem with signing up on this. The only problem I have is that I’m already using Dropbox and Google Drive quite extensively.
Eric Dye says
I know that feel. I am too, plus, I really need an app to keep everything synced.
Dale Aceron says
Like Chris, I use DP, GD and now Box (free 50GB with Pinnacle Studio 16) already. IF I sign up, it may only be to use it strictly as a secondary back up alternative for certain files and projects.

I’m with you.
Paul Clifford (@PaulAlanClif) says
My concern isn’t whether KimDotCom is found guilty, but that the government thinks he is and also thinks there’s no problem taking servers with legal content off-line.
Consider this. What if I’d used MegaUpload as a backup for my books? What if something had gone wrong with my local copy last January? I’d be out of luck even though as the creator, it’s perfectly legal for me to upload copies of my work anywhere I want.
What I don’t like is that the servers seem to be guilty until proven innocent even if the people are innocent until proven guilty.

EXACTLY!

While i too have fears over the legal processes of both online companies and governing bodies what I find most interesting about Mega is how it will affect the cloud storage market.
I desperate want them to create a syncing app to really compete with DropBox, SugarSync and the like because this will force those competitors to reevaluate yheir pricing structures.
I immediately setup a Mega account but am not really interested in it because of the lack of sync app. I currently use free accs with DropBox and skydrive with a total digital space of about 36GB but I could always do with more!
Come on DropBox – I dare you to match it!
