The answer to this question is really interesting, but how this conclusion was made is even more interesting!
Fellow Star Wars geek Tom Murphy took all the lines from the original Star Wars Trilogy and divided all the footage word by word. That’s 11,864 words!
And then he alphabetized them and put together this amazing video:
The results?
- The most common word is the, of course, said 368 times.
- The word with most screen time is you, at 52.56 seconds.
- The 11,684 total words are comprised of 1695 unique words.
- There is a 4-way tie for the longest word in Star Wars between responsibility, malfunctioning, worshipfulness, and identification, all 14 letters.
And the answer we’re all waiting for:
Once.
The word “lightsaber” was said only one time by Obi-Wan Kenobi.
What do you (or anyone else) think of when you hear the word “Lightsaber?”
Yet, it was only said one time.

I could be wrong (and I expect that I may be), but I seem to recall Darth Vader stating in Return of the Jedi several times with “light saber”
Darth Vader: I see you have constructed a new light saber. Your skills are complete. Indeed you are powerful as the Emperor has foreseen.
[Vader brings Luke before the Emperor and hands him Luke’s weapon]
Darth Vader: His light saber.
The Emperor: [to Luke] Ah, yes. A Jedi’s weapon, much like your father’s. By now you must know that your father can never be turned from the Dark Side. So will it be with you.
Am I correct on that? Love the detail work though!

So Vader says, ‘lightsaber’? I’ll have to pull that up and look. I can’t imagine this guy overlooked it, but possiably!

There’s a clip of that second case on YouTube.

I think there’s another instance when they are hanging from the Ewok net.
Eric Dye says
Hmmm…perhaps this guy should double check his work… 🙂
Rick says
I think the confusion is “Star Wars” vs. “Star Wars Trilogy”. It looks like the video and analysis only apply to the first movie. In that case, he is correct that “lightsaber” is only said once.

You win all the points.

Take a closer look at that video. Notice anything missing?
Like Yoda? Lando? Boba Fett? Emperor Palpatine?
Yeah, these were all the words in the first film, not the trilogy.
Eric Dye says
You win all the points for the day. 😛
