John Piper, Desiring God Blog Opens Comments

desiringgod

John Piper and the Desiring God Blog has opened comments via the Disqus commenting system.

This is probably not new news to some, but I’m not a daily visitor to that blog so it was news to me. Can someone tell me when they first moved over?

They had a commenting “system” for the longest time but didn’t actually show the comments publicly. This is a significant shift in terms of engagement and I think it’s a smart move.

I’m still waiting for a lot of other large pastoral/church blogs to turn comments on; perhaps they could learn from John Piper!

Yea I saw that! The blog world smiles. By 'blog world' I probably mean me, but regardless, I'm super excited.

One of their posts generated 545 comments!

I work for Desiring God. We turned on the comments on July 27 as an experiment. We're still collecting data and feedback before making a final decision, but everyone's input here will be taken into consideration. Thanks!

We considered it, and may again if we decide to keep comments on the blog.

Speaking of comments, today's Washington Post's ombudsman column covers the challenges of moderating comments. In this example, an estranged spouse offered details in an article's comments section that directly contradicted what was said in the article. A flood of comments came in as a response, making it a philosophical question of whether to remove nested comments. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/arti…

John, courtesy link to theologians-qua-professionals doing actuarial, medical, and public education analyses of your theological comments.

Another Calvinist gave me the heads-up.

The comments are provocative, but not faith-hostile.

Bye the bye, I love Terry Virgo!
