How Deep Our Love for Devices

I’m swear, I didn’t cry, but I was really, really, really upset.

Perhaps “upset” is just a nice word for saying something completely different.

If there was a contest of how “perfect” a dropped iPhone could land on cement then I think I would have won with a 10/10:

But, it made me wonder how must affection I have for the devices that I own and whether or not it’s a little too much at times.

Sure, I’ve just lost some serious productivity (and green) but did I just lose a part of my soul?

Too dramatic? How’s your Wednesday coming along?

dood. time for a nexus one or a new HTC passion/desire

    • February 17, 2010 at #

Nexus one only works edge on ATT (for now, its coming says many), and the Desire is Q2or Q3 in the US. Otherwise, good suggestion. Would I choose either over an iphone? In a second. Your mileage may vary.

On the bright side at least you can fix it for about $100. Check eBay for an iPhone LCD Digitizer. (http://bit.ly/cYa1YV)

There are all kinds of tutorials on the web on how to fix the screen and/or digitizer. If you only need the glass it’s a cheaper but a little more difficult to fix.

I’ve got one at home that I need to fix myself for a friend, it met his three year old and a ceramic floor. He had a silicon case on it but obviously it didn’t protect it.

I have a contingency plan in place for things like that, because smartphones are expensive….I cunnently have an android based phone (contacts, etc sync with gmail), but if something happens to my G1, I can swap the SIM to my old Blackberry 8820, quick call to TMO to change the data plan, and I can function. Sure I lose some eye candy and couple nice features, but I can cover the basics…

I dropped mine a few weeks ago… but surprisingly I wan’t as upset as I thought I’d be.

It’s just stuff. BUT- I feel you pain homie.

Oh, man. Mine fell out of my jacket pocket this morning (~2.5ft). No damage, though. I feel you. We can sometime become very (VERY) attached to those devices. I say we should all carry a non-smart phone and use it every so often just to bring us back down, ha!

Friend of mine broke hers a few weeks back and Apple charged $200 for a screen replacement. Put an InvisibleShield cover on that puppy and it’ll work good as new…other than the fact that you won’t be able to see stuff…

    Stinks!

OH man I am a typical girl, I will cry for you.

  18. February 17, 2010 at #

I would cry, without a doubt I would cry. In all honesty I would probably be pretty bummed about it for the next week or so. Mainly because I know that I could not afford another therefore I would be stuck.

I gasped when I saw the pic.

    Then I snuggled my phone.

Then I felt convicted for snuggling my phone.

Then I called my wife. She trumps phone.
Have a better Wednesday, John. :)

oh man… my BlackBerry has a bunch of scratches on it… it’s been through a lot over the past year and a half… war wounds.

  24. February 17, 2010 at #

wow… that looks alot like my phone… hit the driveway with no case… OUCH!

  25. February 17, 2010 at #

Oh John… I’m just so sorry. But we do not grieve as those who have no hope. Yea, a new iPhone shall arise (I mean, you’ll have to buy it…). I’m just so sorry.

  26. February 18, 2010 at #

ouch… i feel that! i did the same thing exactly 14 hours after purchasing my 3GS last year… it was like my someone punched my mother.

thankful for: a friendly Genius at the Apple store.

Bummer, but an amen to caring about our devices to much.

Let’s not store up treasures on earth eh? (I’m guilty at times)
