Have You Ever Googled Yourself?

Have you ever Googled yourself?

A number of years ago a group of my friends were hanging out at my house, and the subject came up.

We all went around the room telling about our “other self” on the Internet.

Just as a refresher, I looked myself up:

eric dye googled

The funny thing is, the “other Eric Dye” does some stuff with audio broadcasting — something I’ve been doing for over 15 years — LOL!

So, what do you find when you Google yourself?

Interesting stuff, there.

I never thought of it as an issue of security or taking care of ones online reputation.

So, back to the original question:

Have you ever Googled youself?

What did you find?

Well, the majority of the first page in my Google search of myself were actually me! :)

WOOT! (As long as you were using the general search and not personal ;-) )

Funny thing is, I didn’t even know there was a personal :)

It is incredibly difficult to google myself unless I include unique identifiers. John Hughes seems to be a pretty popular guy from the 80′s. Just not this John Hughes.

Miller is the 6th most common last name in the US, so it’s no surprise to me that I’m nowhere to be found in the Google results. My brother had an interesting dilemma, however. He is a children’s entertainer, and when you googled his name, the first result was a performance artist that is not family friendly. My brother’s solution to avoid confusion? He changed his stage name.

I’m starting to brand myself with my middle name. That helps a lot. Seven of the results with “Paul Alan Clifford” are me. The rest include all three names. If I use quotes, then all but two are me. The two that aren’t are a guy in the UK commenting on Fellows Shredder Oil on Amazon. The problem I have with “Paul Clifford” is that it’s also a 19th century novel whose only claim to fame is the first line, “It was a dark and stormy night…” It apparently gets worse from there.

I’m the only Jonathan Assink going like 6 or 7 pages deep on Google. Even were there to be another “Jonathan Assink” on the web, I’m prolific enough in my posting and presence that he’s got quite the flood to overcome. =)

There is, however, another Jon Assink. But I pretty much beat him to all the vanity urls, so there isn’t too much confusion there.
