Do You Pray Online?

It was over 5-years ago that I prayed online.

I don’t even remember the name of the website. You had the option of adding your own prayer requests, or watching a “prayer ticker” scroll across the screen with prayer requests, so you could pray for each request accordingly.

Would you use an online prayer system?

FRVNT

FRVNT (fervent) is an online prayer app (I can’t believe I just typed: “prayer app”).

Signing-up was quick and easy, and the site was equally easy to use.

You can view two different streams of prayers:

  1. Personal
  2. Public

Personal

You can view your own prayers, other users’ prayer requests that you have added to your prayer list, and review a list of answered prayers.

Public

There are two options when viewing public prayers: Everyone and Answered.

Options

The website is user monitored, so if there is anything inappropriate, you can easily mark it as, ‘inappropriate.’

When you add your own prayer, you have the option to make the prayer request public or private.

I really liked this option, as you could easily use FRNT to manage your entire personal prayer list and keep particular prayers completely private.

Will you sign-up and start using FRVNT?

As a pastor of a mid-sized church I have enough to pray about then to add more to the list. That being said we do use an email system to relay prayer requests to over 100 people, and we have just started to try using a twitter account for the same thing. (Time will tell on that one) The email system works well for our people, and allows for responses and updates, etc.

Online prayer seems to be creeping up all over the place, though this is the first stand-alone app for it I’ve seen. Both The City and The Table Project have prayer list, request, and praise options which is nice, especially since the people on there are within your church community. The downside of course it that you only have access to them if your church sets it up. It’s not online but the BIble/ research software Logos has a prayer list feature too. It even has a quick-view of your most immediate prayer every time you log in.

I really like the idea of Christians from all over the world coming together to pray for one another just because someone asks. If people are actually praying for the requests, it’s fantastic. If people are only submitting requests and nobody is praying, it’s a waste.

    I use WordPress :D

I’ve never been able to get into journalling but i do run several WordPress sites so it was a natural step. At work we remade a website all about global Poverty Prayer and I liked how that worked so I based mine on that one, I found a great theme which worked for me and set it all up.

I have a category set to private that only appear when I’m logged in which works well for more personal stuff and prayers about friends in difficult/sensitive situations. I’ve also disable all the search engine stuff and am considering finding a SEO blocker plugin. I’ve not got anything to hide – just thinking what is appropriate to be searchable.

    I Love it.

That’s really awesome, Mark. You should write a tutorial on that and we’ll publish it here.

I’ve been looking into ‘group’ type things for my church (for likes of prayer requests). Posterous groups looks pretty nifty.

You may want to consider what Mark did, and setup a private WordPress site.

A friend of mine recently released an app for the iPhone called PrayerTracker. It’s actually a pretty simple, but handy tool. It has three sections (Daily Prayer, Unanswered, Answered) so you can remember what you need to be praying for and to see how your prayers have been answered/not answered. The neatest part of it, though, is that you can share your prayers with other people, which is handy in the case of a small group or a similar instance where people are sharing prayer requests or praying for similar things. And it’s free…so that’s always a plus.

I honestly wasn’t too sure about the whole concept at first, but it’s turned out to be quite useful. Here’s a link if anyone wants to check it out.

Nice! We’ll be taking a closer look at that, for sure!

Another web app / social network for prayer that’s been around for a couple years is http://www.kindlejoy.com – has a more visible look at prayers and prayer requests happening around the world, in contrast to prayers being behind a login..

My friend Jim has no job for 10 months. He is a senior aerospace design engineer. Please pray for him.
