For You, Sunday Morning Sound Guy [Video]

As a well seasoned sound guy, I am familiar with the icy glares and confused expressions when something goes awry.

From feedback to volume, you get’em. It comes with the territory.

There is one phenomenon, however, that has always puzzled me. When someone isn’t a really great singer, you get some of these looks. In fact, I’ve been asked if I could “make them sound better.”

Seriously?

It’s you, Sunday Morning Sound Guy, I present this:

How would you like to be the sound guy for this?

I hope and pray, I won’t have this guy as my next door neighbor in heaven…

Doesn’t matter. There’s no pain in heaven.

I’ve mixed worse (my mixing was fine, the problem was at the mic end…)

Wow…I watched about 2 minutes of that…and was trying to think of what effect might help. Not even autotune could fix that.

    That’s just….yeah.

So many times, I’ve had one of “those” singers come to me and make suggestions re: EQ, effects, etc that would refine their voice for a particular song. Unfortunately, all of those effects just enhance what already can’t be helped.

      LOL! So true!

BTW … I think you meant to say, “I’ve had one of those ‘singers’” — LOL!

I don’t know about you guys but we have one background vocalist that we consistently turn up in their monitor but down in the main mix! haha

He’s one of those singers that would get a “Bless him Jesus” from my mom.

About two minutes into this, my 4-yr-old daughter, who had been asleep, yelled down the stairs, “What’s that noise? It’s annoying me.”

Someone has lied to that man.

    • January 23, 2012 at #

Indeed, it is a shame, since there is that Commandment about not lying … :D

Clearly the “suck knob” was turned up. You just turn that down and he’d sound…okay I couldn’t keep it up.

We’re all good at different things, maybe he to try something different. Is it just the wrong key for him?

I’ve never heard the song. What does he mean “pretty famous”? Maybe infamous. Yep, that’s it.

    Wow.

WOW. I’m not sure I can say anything else about this. I work with the sound from time to time when our sound guy is out and I can’t even imagine anything but MUTE that would work for this guy. “Oops, sorry, we are having MAJOR sound board issues. Not sure what to do.” :)

      Brilliant!!!!

      “Oops, sorry …” HA!

The piano player is really good. I really liked the piano player. Super piano playing.
Vocalist? Did I mention the piano player yet… :-)

wow, I just listened to the band he mentions at the beginning sing the same song…..it’s like it’s not even the same song…..

Sometimes when people turn around and look at our sound guy, he just throws his hands up in the air like “it’s not me!” It’s one of the funniest sights to see.

    • January 23, 2012 at #

Any given Sunday, this is the life of The Sound Guy, “It’s not me!”

as they say you can polish a turd but its still a turd.. :-)

I had an issue this past Sunday a strange buzzing in the effects processor sends all through service.. drove me bonkers to the point that after service i literally disconnected EVERYTHING and reconnected buzz was gone.. no idea what caused it…

There’s a technical term for that — “Gremlins.”
