Yes, Facebook seems to have gone out of its way lately to alienate loyal users with privacy issues, ad policies and whatnot. But the fact is that it’s still an interesting social medium for many of us to use.
Personally, I’ve concluded from an analysis of my blog traffic that of all social media I use, Facebook still comes in second for me in terms of referrals. And it’s been holding that position for the last year, regardless of the many issues and the rise of other social media like Pinterest.
That means I’m still very interested in finding out how I can optimize my Facebook use and this Infographic on Facebook’s infamous Edgerank turned out to be highly educational. Here are some highlights:
- Photos and videos will show up more often on people’s newsfeeds than links or plain text
- Comments highly increase the chance of your post showing up in people’s newsfeeds, so inviting any kind of comments is a solid strategy
- Shorter posts do well, better than posts with over 250 characters
- The suggestion of asking for opinions or using ‘fill in the blanks’ types of questions may be a well known one, but apparently it still works

Thank you! 🙂 ps – also posted a new infographic, similar, but looks deeper into how stories are filtered, with a little help from Batman! You can check it out here: http://blog.getpostrocket.com/2013/04/infographic-facebook-edgerank-102-understanding-how-news-feed-stories-are-filtered/

This is such a helpful infographic! I found it through Church Crunch blog. I do have one question: how would I post a link as a photo, as recommended above? Would I just visit the site I’m linking to, download the photo on my computer, upload it to an album on FB, and then link the post in the picture’s description? This may be a silly question, but do I have permission to use the photo from someone else’s blog in this way? Thanks for your help!

Hey Michele! Thanks for the kind words (I’m the creator of the infographic!) You can post a link as a photo using PostRocket if you’d like (my company!). We’re a publishing tool for Facebook Pages. You can simply post the link into our post box and with one click, you can automatically post it as a photo post (with your choice of photos from the article) and the link+title in the caption! Hope this helps! ps- I’d say you don’t need permission to use the photo because you’re linking it back to their blog anyway 🙂 Let me know if you have any other questions!
Best,
Mike
