I think the ultimate example of the “empowering others produces better return on investment” is Jesus Christ and his Disciples.
He gave them himself, teaching them, investing in them, rebuking and restoring them, and molding them into humble servant-leaders that would go on to empower others.
Apparently a natural by-product of the empowerment movement was a natural word-of-mouth marketing that expanded throughout the globe.
Not bad Jesus, not bad.
So when I see Chris Brogan jumping on the “Empowering is better than Marketing” train I say a hearty “Amen!” Our Savior provides a pretty darn good example of proven results.
What’s gotten me all jazzed is that the blog medium, if done and used wisely, can be an amazing tool for empowerment in this technological age and I’m beginning to see the fruit, sotospeak, of my personal efforts in that regard.
How are you empowering others through your blogs and other social media outlets?

I think it's important to remember that some of our peers would love to use technology in their ministry, business, or personal life, but they just need a capable person to sit down with them and show them how. While things like blogging, twitter, and other social media tools come easy to some, a lot of people are still in the dark and may even be afraid to ask someone for help.
I like it when the expert takes the initiative in the beginnings of the empowerment process. I think the expert misses a lot of opportunities when they sit around and wait on someone to ask for help.
I agree chris, great point here.
dude, I love this. I want to spend my life making others better and, in turn, I'm always better for it. The ROI in my life is so amazing – I'm humbled and honored to serve the King – any blessing is more than I deserve!
This is how leaders should lead. Empowering their people to achieve more. Which is what Jesus did. I've heard it said that as a leader you are supposed to train people to take over your position. Brilliant, but scary!
I think that comments are the biggest empowerment in blogging. The reader can contribute to the author's ideas, or maybe change them. Cool, is it not?
Josh, that's what I beleive with all of my heart… That we need to continually looking and investing in our replacements.
Right on!

My senior pastor is all about this. In face, every single staff member of the church (including pastors) were people who made themselves available to God through serving and discipleship starting with cleaning the church and progressing through ministries and leadership. In turn, we each pour into the lives of others at the church and disciple them.
In regards to how I'm using social media to empower others … one way that I'm doing that is through Tokbox video small groups … raising and training up leaders through that means. As I immerse the church more and more into Social Media utilization in every aspect of ministry (Twittercasting services/iCampus, etc), I am looking for others who have a heart to serve and am bringing them into these ministries with the intention of them one day being the leaders.
Shawn,
You're the man..! Sounds like you're already doing it..! Stick around and help inspire others!

i'm experiencing this through a couple of clients who feel unleashed into the wild now that they have connected with the rest of the world. it excites me to sit down with a ministry and and talk about developing and online presence that fits their model.
