You can always count on Seth Godin to share awesome and inspirational insights when it comes to marketing, branding, and all things surrounding entrepreneurism.
In this talk he gave last year at Nearly Impossible, he answers a number of questions from the audience, and while these questions were about small businesses and startups, many of the concepts can be applied to other types of communication, ideas and marketing — including that of churches, ministries and nonprofits.
I absolutely loved his advice about using social media.
“If they would miss you if you were gone, you have earned something of value.”
So many brands — including blogs and organizations — use social media out of obligation or it is used to ‘blitz’ their ‘followers.’ This has two horrible effects that renders your messaging useless:
- Either one, your obligatory social media message feels much like a business handshake instead of a family hug or best friends high-five.
- Or two, your blitzing of social media messages get lost in all the noise that social media has become.
If you want to be heard, if you want to make your social media and marketing messages matter for your church, ministry or nonprofit, answer this question before you update your social media status or send your next newsletter:
Is this something that could be missed?
