Diaspora: The Open Source Version of Facebook

We have been keeping our eyes on Diaspora, an Open Source alternative to Facebook, for a while now but they’ve been very, very quiet – until now.

After doing some significant capital raises (and even raising some money from the Founder of Facebook himself), they’ve updated their blog and let the world know that September 15th is going to be a very big day:

We have Diaspora working, we like it, and it will be open-sourced on September 15th.

We are spending a good chunk of time concentrating on building clear, contextual sharing. That means an intuitive way for users to decide, and not notice deciding, what content goes to their coworkers and what goes to their drinking buddies.

Sweet. It’s on my calendar.

I’m particularly looking forward to seeing not only the technology and platform as a whole but to see how the world responds. I think the socio-ecological impact on the social networking landscape is going to be the most fascinating thing to observe.

We wait, watch, and listen. Cheers to Open Source!

This sounds great but the name! I’m sorry, but it sounds like you would hear it in something like this:

“Side effects of this medication include fatigue, hives, high blood pressure, jock itch and diaspora.”

Their hope is – maybe – to sell their tech to facebook and twitter.

    Just a thought.
