Culture, Morality & Children

As I was eating lunch the other day, I decided to start to narrow down which movies I was going to see over the Holidays. My family always went to the movies on Thanksgiving and Christmas and with ABC’s 25 Days of Christmas as a staple in my childhood, I tend to view this season as one for movies even more than the summertime.

I watched a few trailers and then I came across a movie that had more awards than anything this Transformers fan has every seen. Sure, I like to pretend to be into film but I am a sucker for blockbusters.

It was the trailer for “Buffalo Girls” and I was speechless.

Organized Donating for the Less Fortunate This Holiday Season

As people settle into their routines after a busy Fall of activities, now is the perfect time to start thinking about what you as a group want to do for the holiday season. December is upon us, and now is the time to get to work planning holiday events. In addition to activities for members of your church or organization to enjoy, you should also think of the less-fortunate people around you and ways for you to live out your faith and make a practical impact. Take the initiative to organize a charitable giving drive this fall so you can have a real impact on the lives of the people around you.

First Person Goomba [Video]

Are you a fan of the Super Mario series? Have you played the originals or maybe some of the specialty games like Market Kart or Super Smash Brothers. I love the series and the story of the hero saving the princess.

But have you ever thought about this war of Mario versus Koopa from the other side? The video offers a fun look at a different perspective of the fight and makes the enemies a little more personable.

Showing Appreciation to Creatives [Discussion]

As I’ve served and lead in various capacities in the local church and para-church setting, I’ve come to realize something that we all probably know: creatives are simply different. In fact, I would argue that this is what makes them so gifted, passionate and valuable.

I’m somewhat new to leading people that I would label with this term but I am always looking for ways to encourage, invest and appreciate those that I led, especially because all of them are in a volunteer capacity. As I recently started working with college students, part of my role is to lead the creative team of our campus ministry and I want to improve in many areas, but this being one of priority.

Get Your Christmas Crowd to Come Back

This Christmas, as always, churches across the nation will be filled to the brim with CEOs (that’s Christmas Easter Only) attenders.  For those Christmas service or services, attendance will temporarily skyrocket only to come back down to Earth the next Sunday.  The question that bothers many pastors and leaders is this: how can we retain more of those CEOs?

While you can’t retain all of them, there are some steps that everyone can take to turn more CEOs into regular attenders.

Red & Green Christmas Lights

7 Years Later, This Christmas Lights Display is Still Amazing. [Video]

I love Christmas lights. Now, I know they aren’t the most foundational element of Christmas (especially from a theological standpoint) but they are so simple and fun.

Whether or not you share my partial obsession for crazy yard Santas and Igloos, I think that this video will bring a smile to your face.

Christmas Service Schedule [Discussion]

As most of us are counting down the days until our Christmas Service(s), I’d love to hear what you are doing this year as well as some things you tried in the past that didn’t really work like planned. At it’s core, ChurchMag as a whole, is not just about great content – it’s about facilitating community and solutions.

A New Christmas Tradition

As we get closer to Christmas, it means that my wife is going to continually ask me where I hid her Harry Connick, Jr. Christmas CD. Now, I tend to be more of a Soul/R&B type of guy (thus the reason I hid this CD) but let’s just say her family loves Harry so much that he nearly has figurine in their nativity scene.

All that to say, I always enjoy hearing about traditions that my friends have around the Holidays. Perhaps it’s the fact that your Dad smokes the turkey in a trashcan like the college student in my small group or like my family, you bundle up on Christmas Eve and drive around for hours looking at lights while sipping on hot chocolate.

For those of you that are looking for new traditions, I think I might have just the thing – especially if you’re concerned that Christmas has already started to turn your children into consumers.

Whitney George & Maurilio Amorin Help You Plan Christmas

One of the downsides of the insanely quick era we live in, is that millions of tweets and thousands of blog posts can sweep away some incredible resources from right beneath us.

John Saddington highlighted this resource when it first came out several years ago, but I think it’s worth re-examining for two reasons. One, Christmas is about a month away and two, it’s completely free.

In Celebration of #TEDBillion

What an incredible milestone! I can’t even began to wrap my mind around the number of servers required to make this happen. As people are being encouraged to tweet their favorite TEDTalks, I thought I would share four incredible ones that you may have not have seen yet.
