Ah, Instagram — the only social media channel that you can’t schedule ahead of time.
There’s a lot of pain and beauty to that.
Our team recently discovered that Instagram was giving us the largest return on investment. We found that post after post has more engagement than anything we post on Facebook or Twitter. We know that our church uses Facebook more than Twitter, but the statistics for Instagram really changed our minds on what we should be investing our time into, especially during live events.
Here are 5 methods we’ve used to create church Instagram posts:
1. Photos During Worship

2. Photos with Song Lyrics Overlaid

3. Quote Art

4. Sermon Art

5. Sermon Clips

A lot of our Instagram art we create in house using Adobe products, but some of it is on the fly in apps like WordSwag or Studio+.

What’s your advise for creating a church Instagram account? From what I’ve been able to figure out, you cannot register for an Instagram account via a browser on a computer. You have to install an app on your smartphone/device. But my Instagram app on my iPhone is connected to my personal account and I haven’t been able to figure out how to toggle between two different accounts (personal and church account). Any ideas?

Ah, yes. We use our own smartphones for doing Instagram at our church. We sign in and out of Instagram pretty consistently. We use a church email account as the email address. It’s not ideal and we wish that Instagram would get on the same page as Twitter at making it easy to switch accounts, but we don’t see that happening anytime soon.

These are great suggestions! We’re finding that Instagram is one of the best ways to reach our middle schoolers and high schoolers. We do some video clips and quotes, but what does best for us is close-up pics of people…especially the younger (MS/HS) generation. It’s a big enough hit that some of the students started going out of their way to get us to take their photo during VBS and some other big events. Regramming their photos has also been popular with them.

Great content. Instagram has giving everybody the power of being a photographer, so I believe artistic images and people pics are a must.
