The number of “hidden” and “secret” features in Coda 2 is crazy!
I’ve been using it a while, now, and I’m still uncovering stuff. I’m not sure why Panic isn’t totally upfront about all their features. Maybe it keeps the cool factor going with the app? Maybe it would be too overwhelming?
Whatever the case may be, I like it.
Check out these “hidden” features and tell me if you’ve learned anything new, and be sure to share any of your own “secrets”!
1. Open A New File in a Split
Have you played around with this button ?
It’s the ‘New Split’ button.
After creating a New Split, there are three ways you can open a new file:
- Option-Double-Click a file in the sidebar, pathbar, or Files tab
- Drag any file to the pathbar of your freshly opened split
- Right click a file and say “Open in Split”
If you hold your ‘Option’ key when clicking a New Split, you can select the direction, too:
You can also change your default split direction in the preferences.
2. HTML + CSS + Live Preview
When I read how to do this, I felt like an idiot!
I’ve seen this pane setup before, but never tried figuring it out:
This is where it’s at, folks.
HTML file on the left, live preview in the middle, CSS on the right. What’s really cool, is the live preview that updates automatically when you adjust your code.
Dreamy, I know.
Here’s how to do it:
- Open your HTML file.
- Click the New Split button and select ‘New Untitled.’
- Open your CSS file in the new split you created by dragging the files from the pathbar (or however you like).
- Finally, go back to your first HTML split and click on the New Split — select Preview.
Now, throw Coda 2 into fullscreen mode, and never look back.
3. Create Site Groups
If you’ve got a butt load of sites, you’re going to want to use the Site Group feature!
This basically works just like the iOS and OS X app grouping.
Simply drag one site onto another and it automatically groups. Rename if it you like and add more sites if you want.
That’s it!

For the WordPress developers that like to develop in a local environment, you really should check out ServerPress, if you haven’t already. ServerPress has incorporated specific features for Coda2 users to help facilitate a better development environment. Features like WYSIWYG split view editing on template files, support for AirPreview in Panic’s Diet Coda for Apple’s iPad. (AirPreview will allow you to work in Coda 2 while seeing a site preview on your iPad device.) Some cool, and handy, features.
