ChurchCrunch Live Blogging Tool

churchcrunch_live

Updates at the Speed of the Interweb.

That’s the goal, or at least what I hope to accomplish with a very simple Live Blogging Tool built in WordPress.

You can check it out here: http://ChurchCrunch.com/live

Essentially, I’ve created a very simple way to “live blog” conferences, events, or whatever in real time. What’s nice is that I can do this right on the home screen (if I’m logged in) and it’ll auto-refresh itself right below. Viewers can then comment directly on the post (Gravatar-ready) which can be permalinked, moderated, and edited in-line.

You can actually grab individual RSS Feeds for each particular tag generated so that you could follow one particular speaker or topic of interest through a conference or event. Of course, you can grab the Full RSS if you so choose.

Why build it when I could obviously use a number of other services already created? Here’s my reasoning:

  • I keep 100% of the traffic generated.
  • I can style and design as I wish.
  • 100% brand-affiliated.
  • I can craft more robust experiences, and experiment on my own platform.
  • No dependence on 3rd-party services and heavy-loading scripts.
  • I can do fun things with RSS.
  • I can have multiple authors and contributors live blogging where ever they are. All they need is an account to the system.
  • I can moderate easily for spam and nonsense.
  • I gain a huge hit from increased SEO for the event, since each post is a real blog post, optimized through WordPress.
  • Keyboard shortcuts are the freaking bomb.
  • And more…

This isn’t finished yet, but it’s a first glance at what it might look like.

A mash up of the prologue theme or totally from scratch?

Could you white label it and sell it to others to use on their sites or too customized?

    • June 5, 2009 at #

Hmm. Why sell it? I'll just give it away.

      • June 5, 2009 at #

        love that!!! Give it away!!

:) Not sure why I asked it that way. That didn't answer the real question. Could it be a plug-in that other people could use? That would be awesome.

So would I be outting you to say it looks like WordPress mu with the prologue theme? Excellent application though!

      No,
      Because it's not. ;)

—Sorry for the brevity and rampant spelling errors… This was obviously “Sent from my iPhone”.

This looks rad. Our pastor has been talking about having this kind of live blogging thing for a while now but we have yet to see it done.

When it's ready you should schedule some sort of trial run where we can all get on and see how it goes down, that would tiiiiiiiiiiiiight!

It would be really cool to have 3 contributors all updating in 3 separate rows their responses…multiple perspectives makes things so much more interesting!
