Nielsen: Kids 6-12 Want the iPad

When it comes to tech for younger kids, the iPad is where it’s at.

Nielsen conducted a study seeing what kids wanted across the technical spectrum and the Apple iPad held the top spot at 31% with computers and the iPod Touch up next at 29% each.

Here are the full results:

Creative Inspiration: Esther Havens – Photographer

I found out about Esther Havens through the 6 degrees of Twitter. I’m not positive how, but I am guessing it was probably that something John tweeted out as John & his family are close friends with Esther.

Esther is a humanitarian photographer who travels the world with her camera capturing images that tell stories of the people she meets. She has traveled to Kenya, Iraq, Rwanda, Nicaragua, and Ethiopia in addition to many other countries.

Why You Need More Than 1 Photographer at a Conference

So I was invited this year to Catalyst to take part in the backstage experience as a photographer. Three days (2 conference days plus labs). Dozens of speakers, tens of thousands of people, musicians, entertainers, volunteers, and more. Along with the very talented Andy Brophy, we were tasked with capturing as much of the chaos as we possibly could.

You can see some of our collective work here!

There were other photographers at Catalyst as well, but Andy and I had the responsibility of shooting, editing and delivering images to be uploaded to the Catalyst Flickr page throughout each day.

What was this like?

If You Could Only Choose One: Facebook or Twitter?

The last couple of days, Facebook has had issues. People have been complaining about response time or claiming it’s been down altogether. The scale of FB’s user base prompted many tweets that joked:

Breaking News: Facebook down. Worker productivity rises. U.S. climbs out of recession.

Haha.

It also sparked various discussions on Twitter about what users would rather have if they had to choose between the two. Matt Singley asked publicly which would be harder to give up for a month and I responded very quickly that my choice would be Twitter.

But what if you had to give up one completely? What if you were faced with that choice? Would you choose Twitter or Facebook?

How Do You Recognize True Value?

Back when I was a young lad around the age of 19-21, I was a big fan of horse racing. I still am a fan, but I don’t wager on horses any more like I used to.

I was very good at it. Handicapping horse racing is obviously not an exact science (it is gambling after all), but information I had about track conditions, trainers, weather, surfaces, etc. all played into my decisions and many times it paid off.

I can still remember the time two guys stared with their mouths open as the horse I told them would go wire to wire in a turf race, did just that. At odds of 50-1.

Send Large Files Via Email With YouSendIt

We’re in a time when sending large files to people via email is not uncommon. However, doing so has created bandwidth issues within the workplace. As such, many network administrators clamp down and set a maximum size on emails that can be transmitted.

FTP is an option, but often such larger files are often one time use only and many times you can be dealing with somebody that may not even understand something as easy as FTP.

One of my favorite tools for overcoming such issues is YouSendIt.

Do You Have a Workflow? Check This One Out!

If you’re in any kind of creative position within your church or ministry, chances are you have a specific workflow you like to adhere to.

If you don’t, then you should. You never know when you’ll need that footage you shot last year or an image from a shoot you did six months ago.

Photographer/director Chase Jarvis shows us in below video his entire workflow — from the time the images and footage is captured all the way through the archival process.

Check it out:

Does Technology Empower or Handicap Your Ministry Team?

Today I had the opportunity to make my case for why our church should make the move to Google Apps from their current setup.

After, I had the chance to speak to a couple of people in a more intimate environment and it was at that time a person expressed to me their frustration with our technology and they were concerned about moving to new technology if it wasn’t going to help.

At one point this person said:

“We’re handicapping our staff with the technology we have, not empowering them.”

Ouch.

Inspiration: 5 Sites For Inspiring Photographic Creativity

Ruts.

I cannot stand them. All creative people get stuck in them from time to time.

As a photographer, I am always on the lookout for new sites, new (new to me anyway!) photographers and new blogs. Many times, just looking at what other people are doing can give us that boost we need to get the creative juices flowing again.

So here are five sites that I check often for inspiration…

Taking Great and Creative Photos At Church Events

So…

You’re a photographer and everyone at your church knows it.

They approach you one day and ask if you’ll consider doing photos for a special service such as Christmas, Easter, July 4th, etc. in addition to other events surrounding those holidays.

Anybody can take snapshots. So instead of giving them the typical things one would see in almost any service, be creative. Do something people will remember. Stand out. The best part is, it’s not difficult.

Here are several things to keep in mind…
