So You’re An IT Noob – Part 8 of 10

[This is part 8 of a 10 part series titled: "So You're An IT Noob"]

Earlier we had discussed how to get your team online. At some point, a few wireless access points may not be enough for your team.

WiFi is great, but there may come a time when you will have network based devices such as copiers, printers, network storage devices, etc. that will require the use of cables (though many of these devices are wireless these days).

Despite this being a series for noobs, this is one area where you may have to call in some experts to do some work.

Much of it, however, is infrastructure.

You will want to get in touch with a cabling company to come in and run Cat5/e or Cat6 cable from whatever room (or closet) you designate as your end point. But there are other items you will need in order to make this work.

Creative Inspiration and The Myth of Passion

Find a post or an article these days on the subject of creativity or creative inspiration and it will undoubtedly mention Steven Pressfield’s book, ‘The War of Art.’

It is a great book. I keep it close by on my desk as I refer to it often. The book can be opened at random to pretty much any page and you’re sure to find something that’s worth reading.

The problem is as I pointed out, it shows up everywhere. Don’t get me wrong. I wrote a blog post about getting your creative juices flowing and it included this book.

But I wanted to try something different. I wanted to use my advanced age (in the circles I run in lately, I’m one of the old dudes at the age of 40) as an advantage to share with people sources of inspiration that may not be very familiar, if at all.

Convert AVI to Watch On Your iPad

I am still one of those unlucky ones that doesn’t yet own an iPad. But my brother (who is not a techie) asked me the other day how he could convert AVI format to MOV, so he could watch those videos on iTunes.

The easiest thing would be for Apple to support the AVI format within iTunes, but this is one of those maddening decisions they have made which doesn’t make much sense, so people are stuck.

Let’s move along.

There are some good conversion programs but the best ones are pricey and the free ones are usually junk. In my research, I located an app that will take care of this issue and it is really sweet.

It’s called Air Video and it works on both Mac and Windows platforms.

Let’s take a look! Continue Reading…

So You’re An IT Noob – Part 5 of 10

[This is part 7 of a 10 part series titled: "So You're An IT Noob"]

Your team has computers. You have an internet connection. Everybody in the office is connected. Now what do they do besides being on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube (or Vimeo for your worship guy)?

Productivity software is going to be critical. Email, calendars, word processing, presentations, etc. It’s all going to be needed. As a noob, you’re going to want to make it an easy process. You’re also going to want to keep the expenses down. There are four options (there are probably more) that we’ll focus on. There are probably more, but these are the easiest and quickest options and will get you and your team up and running quickly.

So You’re An IT Noob – Part 4 of 10

[This is part 4 of a 10 part series titled: "So You're An IT Noob"]

In the previous entry, we discussed how to get your church up and running with an Internet connection. In this part, we’ll be looking at being able to share that connection with your staff/volunteers with a network.

In a later post, I am going to delve into the world of Cat-5 cable, routers, switches, and other aspects of a wired LAN, but for this entry we’ll assume you’re going to go wireless.

Thankfully, wireless Internet access is not something determine by what platform you’re running. A computer running Windows, Apple OS, Linux etc can all connect to the same wireless router. So this begs the next question:

Which wireless router should I get?

So You’re An IT Noob – Part 3 of 10

[This is part 3 of a 10 part series titled: "So You're An IT Noob"]

You’ve got your website. You’ve equipped your staff with computers. For the sake of argument, let’s say you’ve acquired a small space to rent for the staff to meet rather than working in Joe’s home and eating all his food or driving the management crazy at Starbucks by squatting in their facility for 9 hours while consuming one cup of coffee the entire time.

Your staff will need internet access. Thankfully there are so many options now outside of dial-up (Any of you old enough to remember being so excited about dropping $200 for that 56K modem?) that you can get your team off and running pretty quickly.

So what options will work best for you?

Let’s look at some of them:
