Pimp Your MacBook with Stick With Me Baby Stickers

Thanks to Apple’s unique design with their MacBook lineup, those with a creative and entrepreneurial spirit have capitalized by creating decals and stickers to place over the illuminated Apple logo. One my favorites is the Iron Man decal.

The crew over at Stick With Me Baby have come up with some cool stickers to add the MB. The descriptions are funny (there are some double entendres so you’ve been given fair warning). Be sure to check the site as well, since the design is excellent, too.

How-To Use Social Media Effectively In The Church

“We need to get…..!” is a rallying cry many Churches make. When a new thing comes out and a Church sees another using it successfully, it’s not uncommon for a Church to follow along.

Calvin recently wrote about the Church and social media. He wrote about its effectiveness:

So is social media effective for a Church? It can be, but in most cases it probably isn’t. The shocking reality is that I bet most Churches know that their Facebook page isn’t producing anything; that is, except an image.

I agree that in most cases it is not effective. The question, however, is:

Why isn’t social media effective?

It’s often not effective because it is implemented and executed poorly. If done right, people will engage and it can be more successful at keeping people informed than any church bulletin.

Battlefield 3 & Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Previews

The Call of Duty franchise changed the landscape of first person shooters in a major way and took it to a new level when they introduced the Modern Warfare series.

Hot on the heels of the COD franchise is the Battlefield franchise published by EA.

There are subtle differences in both series. COD relies largely on infantry combat with vehicles introduced sparingly while Battlefield has players using a multitude of vehicles including fighter jets.

Whatever your preference is, the latest releases look amazing. Battlefield 3 will be released on October 25 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will be released on November 8.

Check out the previews below:

Pulp Fiction in 8-Bit

One of my favorite movies of all time is Pulp Fiction.

In fact, I will go so far as to start an argument and say that ‘Forrest Gump’ didn’t deserve Best Picture honors in 1994. Quentin Tarantino’s masterpiece did.

So, I find this Pulp Fiction in 8-bit to be all kinds of awesome:

The Art of ‘The Long Take’

I love movies.

I will always remember the first “big” movie I went to see. It was ‘Star Wars (A New Hope).’ From then on I was hooked, and aside from musicals which I loathe, I’ll watch all different genres.

Filmmaking is an art, but it can be a tedious process at times. There’s a reason it will take 2-3 months to complete a 90 minute film. A two minute scene can take up to 3 hours to shoot due to multiple takes and the changing of camera angles. To me, it makes the long take that much more of a demanding process.

When it is done right, it’s a thing of beauty.

Here are some of my favorites:

So You’re An IT Noob – Part 10 of 10

[This is part 10 of a 10 part series titled: "So You're An IT Noob"]

Hard drives fail. That is a simple fact.

It is never a matter of if, it is merely a matter of when. Granted, newer SSD’s (solid state drives) are much less prone to failure than your typical platter based drive simply because there are no moving parts. But, SSD’s are still expensive in large sizes. For instance, an Iomega 256GB SSD drive is currently running for $550 on Amazon.

Meanwhile, conventional 2TB external hard drives can be found for under $100.

That’s good news. Storage is cheap. There is no reason for anybody to lose their work these days and since we have become such a digital country, it is critical to have backups of your data.

So You’re An IT Noob – Part 9 of 10

[This is part 9 of a 10 part series titled: "So You're An IT Noob"]

Security, at least in my experience, is still one of the most overlooked aspects of IT infrastructure. Normally, the people I have come across usually think,

“Why would anybody hack our organization?”

The thought process being that if they’re a Church or a business that largely performs services, then they’re not a risk.

Getting hacked is only part of the problem. Malware including viruses, spyware, adware and other issues are also a big problem. If you worked in IT from 2002-2006, I am sure you had to fight off some nasty viruses that would literally shut down a company for days while the IT guys sought to clean it off the system.

While such viruses are not as common these days, malware has certainly become more sophisticated. It is not unusual to find somebody with a computer that is its own bot-net, sending out Viagra spam to the masses and the person in question has no clue. That is until their ISP blocks their outbound content.

Question: Should your church start up have a firewall?

Photographic Inspiration – David E. Jackson

Relationships In A Digital World

Online relationships go back quite a long way. What was once something only imagined on cartoons like ‘The Jetsons’ is now a reality. They had their video phones. We now have Skype and Google+. Our digital smartphones are small computers, packing more power in something that weighs less than a pound than computers that filled entire rooms. Wifi and 3G/4G technology allows us to remain connected all of the time. It seems these days, the only way we go offline is if we take ourselves.

Are the only relationships we create good for us, or bad? Or is it something in between? And where has that technology taken us? Let’s look.
