5 Must-Have Video & Photo Apps

[Editor's Note: This is part two of a five part series of must-have apps.]

I love living in the technological age that we live in now. As a photographer and videographer, I can do things now that would be very difficult twenty years ago. The computer has become the new darkroom and editing station.

When doing my work, there are several applications that would make it difficult for me if they were not available. Hopefully, these tools can assist you in your work.

Do You Like Gmail’s New Design?

The guys over at Google are always looking for the next way to improve Gmail.

It has come a long way.

They’ve recently updated their look again, giving it more of a minimalist feel but allowing people to use new HD themes if they want to go that way. The change has also been rolled out for Google Apps users. However, if you work at an org that uses Google Apps, your administrator will have to turn on the ability to make the change.

Here are some of the highlights of the new look:

Spotlight: Chris Fenner

Chris is a great guy.

I connected with him on Twitter and we started talking video. I was just starting to get into it.

Chris has been neck deep in it, so I asked him questions and he was happy to share knowledge with me. My goal, however, went beyond that as I wanted to cultivate a relationship that extended beyond merely talking shop, and it happened. We got to hang together this year at Story 11 and it’s cool that I can call Chris a friend.

Recently, Chris took his rad video skills from Valdosta, GA and has joined the team of West Ridge Church in Dallas, GA. He has been producing some really cool stuff for them. I was waiting for the time when they’d give him the chance to really show his chops and that came recently with a video he put together for West Ridge’s ‘Night of Worship.’

Culture: Running, Immersing and Engaging

Culture. It’s all around us. In music. In movies. In technology. Unlike say, 25 years ago, access to that culture is right at our fingertips. Computers are no longer just used for for running programs. They have become full fledged entertainment devices.

People have access to such a wide variety of movies, television shows, music, computer programs, mobile applications, etc.

The question for the Christian community is: Where do we fit into this?

One of the joys I get writing for ChurchMag is that aside from format guidelines, I am provided the opportunity to write about a whole host of subjects even it is controversial. My post on Christians and movie making spurred a great deal of debate. After writing that post I started to think more about the broader culture and where Christians fit in.

Box.net – Get 50GB Of Space For Free!

Who does’t love free online storage? I’m a big fan of Dropbox and their success of course, has led to others providing similar services.

Box.net is one of them and in the wake of iCloud being released, they are upping the ante on space. Box’s free account usually offers 5GB of space with a limit of 25MB on a file upload. Well, if you go to the App Store and download the Box.net app within the next 48 days, you will get 50GB of free space and your upload limit will be boosted to 100MB.

Christians Making Movies – Up The Ante

I love movies.

I’ve rated nearly 800 movies over at Flickchart.com and I can watch my favorite movies over and over again.

Right now, my top 5 films on Flickchart are:

1. The Godfather
2. The Shawshank Redemption
3. Inception
4. Back To The Future
5. The Godfather II

As a Christian, I think films are a terrific medium in which to tell people about God & Jesus.

There’s only one problem.

Christians have been doing that and for the most part, doing it poorly.

Steve Jobs 1955-2011

Steve Jobs passed away yesterday. As such, the world lost an icon that fits with other iconic figures like Henry Ford, Alexander Graham Bell and Walt Disney. The products he envisioned and brought to the world were transcended age. People from 8 to 85 use Apple products every day. Jobs was a brilliant businessman. He was a visionary. He was a creative. He will be missed.
