This is the thirteenth article in the series App of the Week series.
Video editing for the past twenty years has either been on a dedicated machine separate from a computer (for my twelfth birthday, I asked for one of those!) or only a handful of editing software on a couple of computers have shown up. Most of the time, this meant high dollar costs and unfortunately limited the exposure of editing systems to those who could afford them. (Unless you obtained them through piracy… which is wrong)
Now that the mobile device is swinging into view as a competitor for the main device in a person’s life, where does video editing stand? Splice Video Editor seems to be a best-option for many people.
The Good
Splice is definitely one of the top mobile video editors out there and here is why.
- FREE FREE FREE Some of you are probably upset that I am not reviewing iMovie, but lets be honest: that $5 price tag for an app I will use maybe once a week if not less is simply not worth it. Splice is free and worth some of the downsides in the long run.
- Feels Like An Editor There are other solutions out there that do not feel like a video editor. Splice allows you to position audio tracks, use transitions where ever you want, incorporate video and photos together, and simply is a natural editor. All other pretenders are not worth figuring out.
- In-Store Additions Normally I do not like add-on purchases, but video editing seems natural. So if you want a graphic, audio file or something else, Splice has a collection of things to help you make your video look great.
The Bad
While Splice is one of the best out there, it has some major issues to overcome.
- Not Intuitive This may be a strong case for a quick demo before you start… some of the solutions took me four or five minutes to figure out how to use and that should not happen with iOS software.
- Zero Social Media Options It’s surprising that they do not let you immediately upload to YouTube or Facebook. This could kill those native apps instantly if they allowed for it. Sure, it’s easy to add those steps in to upload there… but that’s three more steps.
- Video Audio Control If there is a way to do video-audio control, I cannot find it. I’d love to mute the video’s audio and have an audio track play over it, but still a great solution to this point.
