This is the twelveth article in the series App of the Week series.
The browser you use could say a lot about who you are as a tech geek or it could say a lot about how much you buy into a product or brand. We have covered a lot of Google iOS apps so far, so you can infer that we have bought into the Google brand. For all iPhone users, your choices are limited and Chrome has an experience Safari cannot even dream of.
The Good
Chrome is the browser to have, regardless if you love the Google brand or not. Here’s why.
- Tabbed Browsing I had no idea how browsing would be on mobile because you are so limited in your landscape, but with the gestures they have created a superior product. I typically have at least three tabs running at any one time and quickly navigate through all of the tabs.
- Synced Browser If you are using Chrome, but not this feature, you are shorting yourself. Chrome can sync your open tabs, bookmarks, passwords, and omnibox data from your computer to your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad.
- Autocomplete Magic As with all Google products, we have the magic of Google’s autocomplete and preloaded top search results when I am looking for something. It saves time and frustration on my mobile phone when I am already on-the-go and in a hurry.
The Bad
Google has a great app, but I want to see better aspects. Here are three of them.
- Gesture Fails It is so easy for me to accidentally lose a tab when I am looking at the page stack view of my tabs. At the very least, can we implement the “Reopen Closed Tab” feature that is on the desktop?
- Default Browser This is not Google’s fault, I am griping at Apple. I want to be able to set my default browser and avoid Safari at all costs but I can’t. Seriously Apple?
- Slow. Apple’s Fault Again, not Google’s fault and Apple is frustrating. Because of their “proprietary” monopoly on the closed device, they make all other browsers use an older API called UIWebView instead of the faster Safari-only Nitro. Apple, you are hurting consumers!
