AlertRank: What Google Alerts Should Have Been

I’ll be honest: This new tool is pretty darn ugly but it does an amazing job at creating a better understanding of your Google Alerts (If you need some help check out this post: Google Alerts are Important for Ministry)!

Check it out: AlertRank!

It essentially creates a ranking system for you to quickly see where the more influential links and mentions are coming from. It even gives you a nice PDF you can download and share!

It took a bit to get it up and running but I’m very satisfied with it now!

My first report came this morning and helped me quickly identify the blogs that were sending me traffic.

Most excellent.

Not the prettiest for sure….but looks like a winner to me.

It wants you to create yet another google account! It doesn’t work with your current google account? What in the world. Major fail

yes. that is the lamest part.

I am trying it out because I am not happy with my current google alert system. But that makes at least 5 google accounts for me. Really, why does anyone need five accounts to one system.

yip have to agree, but then again I scored I RSS subscription. umm, ok that could be even lamer

Actually you don’t have to create a new Google account. You can associate the Alertrank email address with your existing Google account and then change your alerts to be sent there. http://googlesystem.blogspot.com/2008/01/associate-email-addresses-with-google.html

This doesn’t make sense at all. Easier not more difficult, right?

Hmm.. that was supposed to be a reply to Adam Shields. Must have done something wrong because it isn’t under his name.

deal-breaker…kinda. create another google account or be in the dark? hmmmm.

guess I have to get the anagram tool out again.

it is kind of interesting, maybe it could be a good ‘listening post’ sort of thing. But I have set a few alerts together and will see – over time – is there is anything that I can make use of. Would it be a good idea to put all my site’s important keywords in?

Ha. I’ve been testing this for work and had a similar blog post in the work about it.

John’s in your brain. Stealin’ your blog posts.

meh, I guess it’s alright but doesn’t add any additional value to Google Alerts (for me). Google has been dutifully alerting me daily concerning the keywords I want to know about and I don’t have to sign up for an additional service to get it.

Very cool. Yep, this is what Google alerts should have been for sure. Except the whole set up process.

This tool is for people who manage and engage with lots of search terms and alerts. If you have one ego search and a maybe a few terms, you’re probably not going to get much out of it. If you find yourself not engaging with alerts, or feeling overwhelmed by the number of alerts, then this tool could help you out.
