A good while ago, I wrote about how the last iPhone I would use is the iPhone 6. That turned out to be sooner than I thought when one faithful Sunday afternoon, after church, I dropped my iPhone.
While outside talking to my mother on the church parking lot, I accidentally dropped my iPhone 6 on the concrete. The cheap little iPhone 6 case was no match for the abrasive impact as my iPhone 6 screen shattered.
I thought that the screen was the only thing damaged, but I would later find out that the phone’s basic functions are also messed up too.
Goodbye iPhone 6.
Hello Samsung On5.
The Samsung On5 was the first Android phone I have had since I migrated to an iPhone nearly 6 years ago.
6 years ago, I said goodbye to the Android only to arrive to the digital land of milk and honey that I thought was iOS. Unfortunately, my carelessness has led me back to the wilderness of Android and Google.
But, this has turned out to be a really good thing for me for two very important reasons:
Learning New Tech
While the Samsung On5 appears to feel and operate like the broke cousin of the other Samsung phones in the family, it is pretty reliable.
Learning the Android OS and using some of the programs that would be both on iPhone and Android phones has been both fun and interesting to say the least.
Instead of whining about my time in the Android wilderness, I have managed to make the most of the opportunity. I am learning something new with some new technology and that’s always a plus!
iPhone Idolatry
Unfortunately, we cling to our smartphones like we are magnetized to them. I was the same way with my iPhone. I should’ve known my Mom was serious about me putting my phone away from time to time. I should’ve listened…this time.
A cracked iPhone now sits on my desk in a blue box. And to be honest, I am glad it’s there. It is a reminder that I spent so much time on a device that I thought was doing me so much good that I missed out on experimenting with new tech AND spending the kind of time in Bible study or reading that wouldn’t have happened had my favorite little iPhone not been destroyed.
Now, keep in mind, I was doing those things even with my iPhone 6 on hand. But, it is nice to revisit the old days and ways of, “hey, these Bibles that were actually printed on paper are really, really awesome. I’ll take it with me today instead of holding this little electronic device in my hand on the pulpit at church.”
Will I Get Another iPhone
So, the million dollar question…will I get another iPhone!? Well, to be honest, I may very well do so. But, not the latest, grandest upcoming iPhone that everyone is prepared to sell their house, car and dog over.
After destroying my iPhone, I began to see how wasteful it was to try and get the latest and greatest thing in the first place.
I even began to research on how much it would cost to just go back and get an iPhone 5, which was my favorite model in the first place. And, by the way, it is way, way cheaper now.
Speak your mind...
