A Piezoelectric Kinetic Energy Harvester

I’m sure you know what I’m talking about, right?

Well, just in case you don’t, Nokia has applied for a patent that will harvest energy kinetically by you shaking the phone.

Exactly what you thought those combination of words meant, right?

When I first understood what exactly “piezoelectric” meant I had this crazy idea that missionaries who needed electricity and mobile communication could definitely benefit from something like this.

There are still so many opportunities to innovate. The marketplace builds them for profit, we use them for the salvation of men.

Isn’t that pretty neat?

There are other companies doing similar research into putting piezoelectric “harvesters” into shoes and clothing. Enough energy may be harvested to trickle charge small electronics.

Imagine, go take a walk to charge your MP3 player! Entertainment and Exercise!

That’s so cool and *definitely* could be useful for missionaries. I imagine the army has some sort of shake-phone device. Or maybe they just use energizer haha.

I remember the first time I learned was a kinetic wristwatch was – I don’t have to change out the battery?

This is pretty cool, though I’m kind of surprised we’re just now moving in this direction. Of course, it kind of infringes on planned obsolescence so maybe it’s not so surprising..
