We blogged about VaultPress when it first was announced months ago and I just got an invite (finally!) to try out the service.
Essentially, VaultPress is an enterprise backup and recovery system for WordPress blogs and sites built by the guys that built WordPress!
Just think of it as the best backup and protection solution available to any blogger. Sure, it’s going to cost you a little bit ($15.00 to start per month) and many bloggers won’t feel the need (especially when there are great free solutions via plugins already), but for more serious businesses I’d imagine this to be a complete no-brainer.
Check out these neat screenshots of the backend:
You can definitely be sure that we’ll be using this service for all of our blogs across the 8BIT Network. It’s going to give us insane amounts of “peace of mind” and lower bloat with all of our customized backup plugins.
Complete win. I’m already satisfied!

I’ve played around with a number of the free backup plugins for WordPress, but I settled on more of a home-grown approach. I simply have software that downloads all the changed files and the database every night. It then goes into my backup system (which includes off-site backup), so the data is about as safe as storing in the cloud. Plus there are no plugins needed. A PHP script handles the database, and the files are downloaded using FTP/HTTP. Overall there are 3 copies of the data (original, local, and remote), and I keep the data for 4 months.
