Twitter: Ultimate Guide

ultimatetwitterguide

There have been a number of guides, blog posts, and even eBooks that have been written explaining Twitter. I think I’ve found one that’s worth bookmarking finally on my Delicious account.

Enter the gigantic Ultimate Guide to Twitter.

If we’re going to be using Twitter as a ministry tool, we might as well be the best and most informed on how to use it, right?

That rule probably applies to a lot of things.

Using Christian Jargon Online Confuses People

So just stop.

Save it for when you’re hanging out in your men’s bible studies or discipleship groups, because when you’re online there’s a good chance that the vast majority of the people who actually read your stuff have little to no context or understanding of what you just meant by “eschatology.”

In fact, most Christians don’t even know what “eschatology” even means.

This was a great reminder from Nick C. and his thoughts about “watching our mouths.”

LiveBlogging with Twitter – WordPress Plugin

LiveBlogging typically means you’re using your blog with some of these strategies (or some kickbutt app like this). It means you’re using your blog.

But now, with this really cool WordPress plugin, you can use Twitter as your primary source of updating right on your very own blog.

Now, that’s pretty cool.

I think I’ll be using this during my next conference. What about you?

It’s Not What the Software Does…

But what the user does.

itsnotwhatthesoftwaredoes

This is probably the best reminder for us in today’s new Church-technological roundup and software-shindig: Are we building applications that scream “Look at me I’m awesome!” or applications that let the user do what they need to do without complication?

When was the last time you considered the end-user experience first? When was the last time you took a look at your blog or church website and asked yourself the hard questions?

Let’s review, shall we?

Removing Curly Quotes in WordPress

picture-118Here’s your WordPress hack of the day: Removing curly quotes in WordPress.

Curly quotes are nice, they are beautiful looking, but they suck for usability for your readers, especially if they are trying to copy and paste content and/or code from your blog.

So, I kill them. Kill them all, both in the content and the comments. This ensures the “safest” viewing experience for your readers.

It’s super easy. Just copy and paste the following into your “Theme Functions” php file:

<?php remove_filter(‘the_content’, ‘wptexturize’); ?>
<?php remove_filter(‘comment_text’, ‘wptexturize’); ?>

That’s it!

Here’s to making the blogging experience the very best. Oh, and you have to start with WordPress.
;)

So What Does It All Mean?

Perhaps the coolest video I’ve seen in a while because if all of this is true then I’ve got a lot of thinking to do.

What does this mean to you? What does it mean for us? What should we do about this?

Easter is Coming… Online? – #Easter

easteregss

Easter is coming. It’s my favorite “holiday” of the year. It’s also my daughter’s middle name.

What are you planning on doing this year for Easter in terms of web technology? Will you be “tweeting” something? Blogging something? Inviting you non-Christian friends to a service?

Some people are trying to make Easter really visible online. You can see what LifeChurch is doing from their end of the woods and Tony Steward who is going to be rocking it.

So, I repeat… what are you doing? Blogging about eggs and bunnies is ok too, in my book.

ShareThis Releases New Widget with Twitter!

sharethisAnnounced a little over a month ago, ShareThis was planning on unveiling a new rev on this very popular widget.

Taking a look this morning I see that it’s finally here.

For those that already have this widget, apparently it’s upgrading automatically, so you already have the goodness.

For those that haven’t seen this, you might want to take a look.

The nicest thing about this version is that it’s even more compact and less obtrusive and that it now supports Twitter integration (Tweet This) as you can see to the left.

I’m also using it on the bottom left of every single post now. I’ll try it out for a bit.

What about you?

Sunday Special QA No. 1

ssqaSunday’s a good day to take it easy.

I’ve decided that on Sunday’s I’m not going to do any blogging except for a very simple post series called “The Sunday Special” where you get to ask me anything you’d like.

You can ask about me about web technology, wordpress, blogging, what I ate for breakfast… whatever. I can’t promise that I’ll answer all of your questions, but feel free to answer each other’s questions as well. I’ll try to answer the questions throughout the coming week.

Simple enough, right? Go.
